UM Pro-Rector Professor Godfrey Baldacchino has been elected President of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA) for another 4-year term.
The election took place on 14 and 16 June 'Islands of the World' Conference, during which 150 papers were presented.
The University of Malta was represented by 5 academics, captured in the attached photo: Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino (Sociology), Dr Christian Bonnici (Project Support Office), Ms Anna Baldacchino (Education), Prof. Alexiei Dingli (Artificial Intelligence) and Dr Rosemarie Azzopardi (Economics).
Professor Dingli is also Mayor of Valletta, one of two European Capitals of Culture (CoC) for 2018. The second CoC is the city of Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, and that is where the ISISA conference started, allowing Prof. Dingli to meet his counterpart, Mr Ferd Crone, the Mayor of Leeuwarden, for an exchange of views and experiences.
The conference then continued on the island of Terschelling, one of the Frisian islands of the Netherlands, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared between the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.
