Through this Agreement, the University of Malta aims to establish a Diploma in Wind Band Studies to be offered by the Department of Music Studies within its School of Performing Arts. The Malta Band Clubs Association, on the other hand, reaffirmed its commitment to provide logistical and practical support for the implementation of the Diploma, which will run on a two-year part-time basis. The collaboration between the two Parties is aimed at ensuring the successful execution and operation of the Diploma.
The Diploma in Wind Band Studies is mainly designed for musicians who are either actively involved in the different musical roles in wind bands, such as playing, teaching and conducting, or are envisaging the possibility of engaging themselves in such roles.
Nevertheless, this course is flexible enough to welcome students from different musical backgrounds and experiences who are interested in developing their creative musicianship skills, and are seeking to acquire the knowledge and tools to engage critically with the diverse musical experiences that, in one way or another, relate to the world of wind bands.

The Diploma Programme of Study shall include two compulsory student placements aimed at providing students with the opportunity to experience on-site band practice with a member of the Association. Students who successfully obtain the Diploma award shall be eligible to apply for the UM Degree of Bachelor of Music (Honours) or the Higher Diploma once this has been set up. However, in order to be registered for the Degree of Bachelor of Music (Hons), applicants must also satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in UM’s Admissions Regulations.
