Il-Laqmijiet Karkariżi fil-Kultura Maltija – Dizzjunarju is part of a project commissioned by the Birkirkara Local Council. It is an analytical investigation in the cultural aspects of local nicknames. The book, by Prof. Charles Briffa is published by Horizons, Malta.
This publication involves the readers to reproduce mental representations that will help them understand their ancestors better, because nicknames reflect the experiences of those who lived before us. And these experiences offer us the impressions of what our ancestors felt and thought in different situations and times.
The culture related to nicknames reveals a tendency of cooperation in the perception of society. As a matter of fact, the study of lokal nicknames provides a bridge between linguistic research and society. It demands an interdisciplinary approach as it involves history, sociology, psychology, and linguistics. Prof. Briffa, however, concentrates mostly on a linguistic analysis of nicknames but hopes that others will further this study into the other areas.
The launching of the book is to be held on 10 December 2018 at 19:00 at San Anton Palace, Attard.
