On 4 October 2018, from 13:00 to 16:00, the Final Event of the Jobs in Tourism Project funded by the European Commission, took place during the Freshers' Week at the University of Malta - Msida Campus from 1 to 5 October 2018.
The workshop was built upon the study “Blueprint for sectoral cooperation on skills in tourism: enhancing the image of careers in the tourism sector” which was initiated according to one of the four priority actions identified in the EU Tourism Policy of the European Commission in response to some of the challenges faced by the tourism sector, namely promoting quality of jobs in tourism and fostering appropriate skills development.
The workshop focused on the perception that job seekers and entrepreneurs have of careers in tourism and offered insights into their expectations, covering positive aspects of tourism professions and biases that may hinder access to tourism careers; essential skills, attributes and qualifications for candidates willing to work in tourism; the role of education in this context; and the use of tools and initiatives created with the purpose of supporting self-development and employment.
In the Final Project event, the following items were covered by Dr Cardia and other representatives of the Institute for Tourism, Travel & Culture, and other outstanding speakers representing some of the most relevant stakeholders in the tourism and culture sector at local level:
- General overview of the Jobs in Tourism Project and its aims and results
- Description of Skills and challenges in the tourism sector from the entrepreneurs' and jobseekers' point of view
- Presentation of local and European relevant case studies for transferring skills in the tourism and culture sector
