Professor Louis F Cassar, Director of the Institute of Earth Systems, attended UNEP’s Joint Scientific Advisory Panel and Review Editors Meeting for the Sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) in Cairo last month. The meeting was organised by the Centre for Environment and Development of the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) on behalf of UNEP.
The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is a consultative and participatory process under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the CEDARE acts as Secretariat on behalf of UNEP. Reports produced by the GEO process are independent assessments of the state of the environment across the globe; they synthesise current data, information and knowledge, in the hope that their findings will inform future decisions and actions on the environment, ultimately leading to positive change.
The purpose of the Cairo meeting was to assess the GEO-6 review process, to advise the Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) on further peer review strategies, and to report on the Review Editors’ findings thus far. This draft report will then be overseen by technical experts from national governments, as well as by UN specialists and review editors.
As Review Editor for Biodiversity, Professor Cassar is responsible for ensuring that all substantive expert and government review comments concerning the global loss of biodiversity and the proposed strategies for its conservation are afforded appropriate consideration within the review process.
