The University of Malta Gozo Campus has just issued the 38th edition of The Gozo Observer. This publication once again presents a number of interesting articles relating to Gozo.
Professor Maurice Cauchi’s editorial treats the issue of ‘Educating Adults’. Another two articles relating to the educational sector include that written by Charles Daniel Saliba on ‘The Teaching of Maltese as a Foreign Language’ and another by Joanne Sultana on ‘Dealing with Autism in Gozo’.
In his article ‘A Protest Letter from Gozo during the Birth of Press Freedom in Malta’, Professor Joseph Galea explains the contents of a letter which was published in ‘The Harlequin’ in December 1838 and whose author hailed from Għarb. The village of Għarb also features in an article by Toni Calleja about the genealogical history of Karmni Grima’s family name.
Anita Muscat traces ‘The Origins of the Scout Movement in Gozo’ inspired by the maxim Scouting is an adventure that will prepare its members for life. The Victoria Scout Group recently suffered the loss of its founder and first Group Scout Leader, Mr Joseph Grech, who also served as President of the Gozo Business Chamber. This issue includes an appreciation about him written by Joe Muscat.
In another article Anton Tabone (ex-Minister for Gozo and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives) describes the life and achievements of his uncle Ċensu Tabone, leading politician and ex-President of Malta.
Another two appreciations appearing in this issue relate with two regular contributors of ‘The Gozo Observor’. Dr Joseph Bezzina delivers a detailed description of the life and works of Anton F. Attard whom he describes as ‘an expert in the Folklore and History of Gozo’. Edwin Lanfranco remembers Joe Sultana, renowned Gozitan ornithologist and author on the subject.
Book reviews include that by Prof. Lino Briguglio about ‘Health and Society’ authored by Prof. Maurice N. Cauchi. Geoffrey G. Attard reviews three publications, namely: ‘Ir-Refuġjati Maltin f’Għawdex fi żmien il-Gwerra’ written by Frank and Charles Bezzina, ‘Il-Bolla tal-Kolleġġjata tal-Għarb’ by Horatio Caesar Roger Vella and Aaaron Attard-Hili’s ‘Bozzetti. The Ingenuity of Conception’.
As customary, the Gozo Campus Administrator Joseph Calleja, gives an account of courses, events and other activities held at the Gozo Campus since the previous issue.
