A new joint honours degree in geosciences and statistics & operation research will be starting October 2019.
What is Geoscience?
Geoscience uses scientific tools to study all the spheres of our planet, explore its past and model its future behaviour. We apply theoretical, experimental and computational science to understand and tackle problems affecting the Earth and society.
What Is Statistics?
Statistics is concerned with scientific methods for collecting, organising and analysing data, as well as drawing valid conclusions and making reasonable decisions on the basis of such analysis.
What Is Operations Research?
Operations Research is the application of mathematics as well as computer science, economics and other disciplines, to problems involving decision-making. It can be defined as a discipline which employs a set of tools, often mathematics based, with the purpose of solving problems.
Entry Requirements
Pure Mathematics (Advanced, grade C or better) and Physics (Intermediate, grade C or better)
OR
Chemistry (Advanced, grade C or better) and Pure Mathematics (Advanced, grade C or better) and Physics (Intermediate, grade C or better)

Computing (Advanced grade C or better) and Pure Mathematics (Advanced, grade C or better) and Physics (Intermediate, grade C or better)
Aims of joint degree:
1. Learn the fundamental science needed to understand the Earth and its processes.
2. Learn how to use the notions of uncertainty and randomness in a logically valid and mathematically sophisticated way and become confident in analysing and solving problems related to geoscience and its involvement in societal aspects.
3. Knowing which branch of relevant mathematical theory should help in the understanding of practical problems and also become familiar with investigative methods and data processing through field, laboratory and computational work.
4. Use various types of software packages commonly used in the fields of Geosciences and Statistics and Operations Research.
