A number of University of Malta academics were among those who received Malta’s highest honours for the sterling work in their respective areas on the 46th anniversary of the Republic.
Prof. Charmaine Gauci, Dr Chris Barbara and Dr Charles Mallia Azzopardi who are members of the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, were presented with the highest honour, Ġieħ ir-Repubblika, for leading the country through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prof. Stephen Montefort, another member of the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery was made a member of the National Order of Merit, as was retired Maltese literature professor, Charles Briffa.
These honours were presented by President George Vella during a ceremony in Valletta, following the annual military parade at St George's Square.
Ethics professor Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Agius and Biology professors Alan Deidun and Prof. Carmelo Agius, received the Republic Day Medal (the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika).
Talking about how Many “I am confident in the capabilities of the people of Malta and Gozo, to rise on their own feet in no time ... I would like to see us maturing into a more considerate and empathic society, particularly with the elderly, the more vulnerable, our children, and one that fully acknowledges how crucial their education is", said the President of Malta during his speech.
Prof. Deidun took to Facebook to express his gratitude to everyone who’s been with him throughout his life’s journey, saying also he is “truly humbled by the recognition my country has shown me and I congratulate all my fellow recipients for their impeccable contribution to this country.”
The University of Malta wishes to congratulate each of the recipients and commends their success.
