A student of the University of Malta’s Institute for Physical Education and Sport, currently in process of completing a Masters in Physical Education and Sport, and who is competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, has made her Olympic debut on Tuesday 27 July 2021, and finished third out of four participants in the Weightlifting Category.
Through her participation in this international competition, Ms Yazmin Zammit Stevens has now made a name for herself as Malta’s first-ever female Olympic weightlifter.
She set a national record at the Olympics in the Clean and Jerk when she managed a 105kg lift.
Zammit Steven’s participation also makes for the second time a Maltese athlete competed in weightlifting at such a level.
IPES shared an update on its social media account, wishing Ms Zammit Stevens a great competition, and disclosing that another Masters student, Ms Maria Vella Galea, is also with the team in Tokyo, and that Dr Lucienne Attard, chef de mission for the Maltese contingent, and Dr Kirill Micallef Stafrace, both lecturers at IPES, are in Tokyo making sure the athletes are at the top of their game.
