On Monday 18 October, the Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, and Pro-Rector (and Chair of the Institute’s Board), Prof. Carmen Sammut, visited the Institute for European Studies for the official opening of the newly refurbished Library for European Studies. Previously known as the European Documentation Centre (EDC), the Library underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2020 and 2021, with the installation of new flooring, shelves and desks as well as the creation of a sofa area so as to provide a more welcoming area for students to interact with each other.
As explained by the Institute’s Director, Dr Mark Harwood, during the opening, the refurbishment was partly funded by the European Commission as well as investment from University through its capital funds.
The library has an extensive range of books on a broad range of topics related to European Studies as well as hosting the EDC which remains a depository for EU information and forms part of the EU’s network of Europe Direct information centres which can be found across the Union. The library’s collection is constantly expanding and its database of books forms part of the main library’s database. Books can also be borrowed and all University students are welcome to visit and use the space, the Institute being situated next to the new Student Hub, opposite Gateway.
