Following the incident involving Lamin Jaiteh, the Platform for Migration notes that this incident constitutes another reminder that urgent and immediate actions are necessary to halt the exploitation of migrant workers in Malta and ensure that they are treated humanely. Whilst this incident goes beyond human rights concerns, it does point to the serious need to focus on the issues of worker exploitation, which include but are not limited to the lack of adequate health and safety in workplaces.
Furthermore, this incident points to an urgent need to critically reflect on discourses and practices around migration, and how migrants and their families are treated. There is a pressing need to address the institutional neglect and lacunae that allowed for such action to take place, and the relevant measures that need to be taken by responsible entities such that something like this never happens again.
