On Monday 13 June 2022, Rev. Dr Kevin Schembri, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Theology presented his book publication to Prof. Alfred J. Vella, the University Rector.
The publication honours the legacy and works of former UM academic, Mgr Prof. Annetto Depasquale, on the 10th anniversary of his demise. Bishop Depasquale lectured in Canon Law at the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Laws between 1968 and 1999. He was a member of the University Council for 20 years, from 1988 to 2008.
Dr Schembri said, “I felt it was my duty—as Mgr Depasquale’s successor in the teaching and research in Canon Law at the University of Malta—to honour the memory of this gentle, studious and diligent academic.” Dr Schembri also thanked Mgr Anton Gouder, co-editor of the publication, for his support and collaboration.
The book features almost 300 pages and is divided into three main sections. The first two parts present a detailed biographical profile and the experiences of 24 persons who knew Depasquale closely in different settings. The third section contains interviews and articles by Depasquale, notes of his speeches, and his personal points and prayers from the retreat in preparation of his episcopal consecration. With its 80 colour photographs, the volume sheds light on many of Depasquale’s qualities: he was humane and attentive; scholarly and hardworking; a man of deep spirituality; he loved his family dearly and they loved him back; a faithful Catholic priest in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.
Published in hardback by Klabb Kotba Maltin, the book may be purchased online or directly from the author.
