Earlier this month, Adam Gauci, Anthony Galea and Audrey Zammit, from the Oceanography Malta Research Group (OMRG) at the University of Malta, attended the EMODnet - Ingestion and safe-keeping of marine data 3 kick-off meeting held in Athens.
EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network) consists of more than 160 organisations that together focus on assembling, harmonising and making marine data, products and metadata more available to public and private users. The EMODnet Ingestion project, now in its third iteration, aims to identify and reach out to new potential data providers and encourage them to include their data in this repository.
The University of Malta is one of the National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC) and has been involved in this project since its inception in 2015 . The aim of the project is to invite marine data providers to submit the raw data that they collect to the EMODnet Ingestion Data Portal. The data are validated, processed and stored in dedicated national data centres. Validated data are populated in the appropriate European infrastructure (such as SeaDataNet, EurOBIS and others depending of the theme).

During the meeting, the OMRG researchers reported their activities which fall within the aims of EMODnet Ingestion and took the opportunity to introduce the SEA-EU Marine Data Literacy Course as well as the work being done in reSEArch-EU to promote Open Science.
The role of the researchers of OMRG is that of being EMODnet ambassadors, looking for potential data sources, as well as assisting in presenting the data according to the appropriate standard.
