Last week the Institute for Climate Change & Sustainable Development, together with the Estates, Facilities & Capital Development Directorate, installed brand new bicycle racks around campus.
The new racks are Sheffield type bicycle racks that give more security when chaining the bike as you can attach it from different angles such as the main frame and wheels whereas the older type of bicycle racks can damage the front wheel very easily. These types of racks prove to be the most popular amongst cyclists.
The renovation project cost was around €5,000 thanks to the Estates and facilities who funded this project and to ICCSD for the initiative.
According to the latest survey done by the Institute, there are 150-160 staff and students who use the bicycle as their daily commute to University. That represents an approximation of 1.1% of the total UM population.
“A project which is still in the pipeline is getting a bicycle & walking lane around the University ring road, we look forward to that in the near future.” said Raphael Mizzi, Green Travel Plan (GTP) Coordinator at ICCSD.
