The final year Executive MBA Strategy cohort accompanied Dr Nathaniel Massa on a visit to the Meridiana Wine Estate to wrap-up a published strategy case study exercise undertaken earlier in the semester on campus, focussing on the company’s strategic alliance and eventual ownership by Marchesi Antinori Srl – one of Italy’s oldest fine wine producers, dating back to 1385.
Coincidentally, the FEMA visit to the Estate took place when Marchesi Antinori was prominently in the international business press – having just completed its acquisition of the renowned Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in Napa Valley, California – among the largest premium wineries in the U.S, notably acclaimed for winning the Cabernet Sauvignon competition in the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris.
The visit at Meridiana Wine Estates followed management’s kind invitation. On-site, MBA participants engaged in discussions on strategy and the winery’s operations with Estate Manager Mr Karl Chetcuti. Also present were Mr Mark Miceli-Farrugia, the original founder; as well as businessman and distribution specialist Mr Stephen Rausi, contributing their lived perspectives on the early-days and evolutionary accomplishments of the brand and company.
After discussions, an insider’s tour of the facilities and winemaking operations was followed by wine tasting and nibbles on the terrace overlooking the vineyard.
While grateful to all involved, Dr Massa and FEMA take the opportunity to thank Mr Karl Chetcuti and the management team for their invitation and warm welcome in sharing Meridiana Wine Estate’s journey and success story.
