On 27 May, during the first highly successful edition of the Mediterrane Film Festival, the University of Malta and the Malta Film Commission signed a new memorandum of understanding concerning the M.A. in Film Studies offered through the Faculty of Arts.
The University was represented by the Rector, Prof. Alfred Vella, as well as by the Coordinator of the M.A. in Film Studies, Prof. Gloria Lauri-Lucente. Film Commissioner Johann Grech emphasised the importance of a master’s degree specifically devoted to the theory and practice of filmmaking, as a learning opportunity which, among others, contributes towards the growth of the national film industry.
The M.A. in Film Studies was launched in 2015 and, as Prof. Lauri-Lucente explained, “its ultimate aim is to see into images and not to simply look at them, to listen to sound and silence and not simply to hear them”. In their trajectory of discovery, students of this master’s programme are invited to probe into the theoretical and practical dimensions of film as well as its relationship with the other art forms within the Humanities.
The M.A. in Film Studies is a part-time evening course offered over 3 years and is eligible for tax rebates under the Get Qualified Scheme. Applications and further information are currently available online.
Applicants who are not in possession of a first degree can be considered if, following an interview and the submission of a portfolio, the Admissions Board is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of relevant professional qualifications or experience.
