It’s been a busy year for the SEA-EU Alliance, one of the pioneers in the European Commission’s European Universities initiative, an alliance of 9 coastal European universities: Cadiz (Spain), Western Brittany (France), Kiel (Germany), Gdansk (Poland), Split (Croatia), Malta, Algarve (Portugal), Naples (Italy) and NORD (Norway).
Here are some of the most memorable SEA-EU initiatives that took place in 2023:
UM representation including the UM Rector engaged in pivotal discussions at SEA-EU Governing Week in Gdansk, redefining project management, and showcasing commitment to alliance's sustainability and growth.
- June: New SEA-EU logo!
At a meeting of communication experts in Malta, the decision was taken to rebrand the alliance.
- July: First SEA-EU Staff Day
Valletta Campus hosted the inaugural SEA-EU Staff Day, gathering UM's staff to celebrate the achievements of the first phase of the alliance and unveil ambitious plans for SEA-EU 2.0.
- October: Launch of the SEA-EU Hut
The SEA-EU Hut, a new point on the campus map, was inaugurated at the University of Malta, symbolising a long-term partnership among the SEA-EU universities. Visit the SEA-EU Hut every Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and find out what opportunities SEA-EU has in store for you.
- October: SEA-EU Football Tournament
The SEA-EU Football Tournament united 70 participants from four SEA-EU universities, culminating in thrilling victories for the Eastern Regional Council (staff team) and the University of Cadiz (students’ team).
- November: SEA-EU Photo Contest
The local winners representing UM in the SEA-EU photo competition, entitled “Sea of Diversity”', were Emma Borg, Luisa Zoe Zimmerman, and Arjun Puthiyadatha Radhakrishnan. Luisa Zoe Zimmerman secured first place on the international stage, showcasing the extraordinary talent of the University of Malta.
- November: Second SEA-EU Staff Day
Valletta Campus hosted for the second time, the SEA-EU Staff Day, spotlighting SEA-EU nested initiatives: reSEArch-EU, SEA-EU DOC, and TURQUOOOISE.
- December: Governing Week (Split, Croatia)
The members of all nine SEA-EU universities met for the second time during the SEA-EU Governing Week to strengthen cooperation.
During 2023, another two SEA-EU projects were completed:
- SEA-EU DOC (supporting competencies of PhD students, end date: August 2023).
- reSEArch-EU (the scientific arm of the SEA-EU project, end date: December 2023).
Another project, TURQUOOISE (development of SEA-EU joint degrees), will also come to an end in January 2024.
