A study recently published in the official journal of The Royal College of Physicians of London, ‘Clinical Medicine’ (impact factor 4.4), by UM academics Dr Caroline Jane Magri, Dr Robert Xuereb, Prof. Stephen Fava and Prof. Joseph Galea, together with Dr Rachel-Anne Xuereb and Dr Sara Xuereb, highlighted the importance of sleep for optimal health in subjects living with type 2 diabetes.
The study found that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with macrovascular disease in univariate analysis as well as in multivariate logistic regression analysis. Another important finding of the study was that increased adiposity and depression were independently associated with markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, which in turn leads to cardiovascular disease. These findings provide evidence for the importance of good sleep quality in maintaining cardiovascular health in patients living with Type 2 Diabetes.
