The International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies has launched a Special Issue entitled “Developing Generative-AI Pedagogies Using Lesson Study”. This Special Issue, which is planned for publication in the beginning of 2026, focuses on the role that Generative-AI may have in the implementation of Lesson Study. Lesson Study, a Japanese model of teacher learning, is an ongoing collaborative approach that teachers can adopt to develop their knowledge of teaching and learning.
Through the Collaborative Lesson Study Malta (CLeStuM) programme, housed at the Faculty of Education, Lesson Study has recently flourished and spread across several primary, secondary, and post-secondary schools in Malta.
This Special Issue explores how Lesson Study practitioners and researchers conceptualise and develop Lesson Study to improve teaching and student learning through the integration of Generative-AI. It will serve as a forum where researchers, Lesson Study leaders, and teachers can learn, experience and share their insights, approaches, and models for developing Lesson Study practices with the use of Generative-AI enabled applications.
This Special Issue is therefore directed to explore practices that integrate Generative-AI into teaching and learning using Lesson Study. In the process it is envisaged to serve as an academic reference and a valid contributor to the development of practical guidelines for the integration and subsequent naturalisation towards Generative AI within standing educational processes educators.
Working alongside two other internationally recognised academics in the fields of teacher education, AI and Lesson Study, Dr James Calleja and Dr Patrick Camilleri are the guest co-editors of this Special Issue.
Dr James Calleja has a vast experience leading Lesson Study where he also delivers Lesson Study courses and seminars to teachers and school leaders locally and abroad. He is also a Council Member of the World Association of Lesson Studies and team leader of the CLeStuM programme. Dr Calleja has also presented his Lesson Study work in local and international conferences and published research in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Patrick Camilleri is a digital pedagogist and a consultant abroad in digital leadership and innovation, and AI in education. He has contributed to AI in Education in several overseas conferences and meetings and, workshops in local schools. For the last three years he has held tenure as the Maltese representative on the media literacy expert group in Brussels.
