UM academic Rev. Dr Kevin Schembri from the Faculty of Theology delivered the opening keynote lecture at an international conference held at St Paul’s University, Ottawa, Canada, from 13-17 May 2024.
The conference focused on addressing spiritual, psychological, and ideological abuse. It was organised by the Centre for Safeguarding of Minors and Vulnerable Persons within the Faculty of Canon Law at St Paul’s University and attracted approximately 80 participants attending both in person and virtually.
Rev. Dr Schembri’s lecture was titled Shades of Justice: The Power and Pitfalls of Canonical Remedies in Addressing Abuse. Beyond the keynote, he led a workshop discussing the impact of abuse on communities and participated in an interdisciplinary panel discussion.
The panel featured former Canadian Senator Hon. Marie Charette-Poulin, Archbishop Paul-André Durocher, Dutch lawyer Richard Korver, and the Centre for Safeguarding of Minors and Vulnerable Adults director, Prof. Mariéle Wulf.
