Over 150 students from San Andrea School, St Martin's College and Junior College participated in a number of media and misinformation workshops which were organised by the University of Malta's Department of Media and Communications throughout May 2024.
Prof. Gorg Mallia and Ms Megan Mallia spearheaded this initiative.
The students, who ranged from 11 to 17, were introduced to MedDMO and engaged in discussions about misinformation and disinformation, how to question content, and how the term ‘fake news’ can actually be used by abusive figures as a means of censoring true journalism.
The feedback given by the participating students in the form of questions and comments made it evident that these subjects interest them thoroughly and they want to explore them more.
The Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory (MedDMO) brings together digital investigation journalists, media literacy experts and academic researchers from Cyprus, Greece and Malta working to counter the disinformation crisis facing democracies across the globe. The project is part of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), a network of hubs across Europe tackling disinformation narratives that have polarised the EU.
