Throughout the time when Malta was ruled by the Knights of St John, there was a recurring ‘Corsican dream’.
Some grand masters contemplated swapping Malta for Corsica.
These included Jean de Valette in 1567, Nicolas Cottoner in 1667 and Emanuel Pinto de Fonseca in the 1760s.
Had the dream come true – in some form or shape – the destiny of Napoleon Bonaparte and so much of Europe could have been quite different.
A tantalising ‘what if’, indeed.
