Rev. Prof. Carl-Mario Sultana, Head of the Department of Pastoral Theology, Liturgy, and Canon Law at the Faculty of Theology, has been elected President of the Équipe Européenne de Catéchèse for a four-year term.
The Équipe Européenne de Catéchèse is an association that brings together those responsible for catechesis in European countries and professionals engaged in catechesis across Europe, including directors of academic institutes, catechetical formation centres, and experts in the field. It aims to foster collaboration and exchange among these stakeholders and to promote research and reflection on catechesis in contemporary European society.
As President, Prof. Sultana will represent members from various European countries and provide expert advice on relevant issues. He will also organise the bi-annual Congress, where members share their experiences and explore themes of European significance in catechesis. The newly elected Standing Committee includes members from Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Romania.
The election took place during the bi-annual Congress of the Équipe, held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from 29 May to 3 June 2024. The congress focused on ‘Liturgy, Catechesis, and Human Experience’.
At the congress, Prof. Sultana led a workshop titled ‘Catechesis, Liturgy, and the Family’. In his presentation, he emphasised the central role of Jewish education within the family and traced how Christian family education gradually shifted to external parties over time. He concluded with several proposals to reposition the family at the heart of Christian formation. The workshop ended with an open discussion among the participants.
