On Wednesday 24 July, 2024, the University of Malta held a ceremony with members of its community to celebrate its recent achievement of being awarded the NCPE Equality Mark Certification.
Together with National Commission for the Promotion of Equality Commissioner Ms Reenee Laiviera, the Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Hon. Rebecca Buttgieg awarded the NCPE Equality Mark Certification to the University of Malta Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella.
This certification recognises the University's commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable working and learning environment for all its staff and students.
In her opening address, Prof. Carmen Sammut, Pro-Rector for Staff and Student Affairs and Outreach claimed that, “it is paramount that we treat our students and staff as individuals.”
She continued by underlining that, “Success requires both a bottom-up approach and a vision and mission at a leadership level. Leaders cannot abdicate their role; they must embody conviction and tirelessly promote equity and justice for the betterment of all. But we must put our ears to the ground and listen to what students and staff wish to achieve.”
This was followed by an intervention from Commissioner Laiviera who stressed how certified organisations must demonstrate a commitment to implement best equality practices going above and beyond legal requirements.
The Equality Mark Certification is awarded by the NCPE to organisations that demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and work towards eliminating discrimination in the workplace. Achieving this certification confirms the University of Malta's commitment to implementing policies and practices that promote equality and create a supportive environment for all employees and students, regardless of gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation, or religion or any other protected characteristic.
UM's journey towards this accomplishment involved a comprehensive evaluation of its practices, policies, and initiatives aimed at promoting equality.
Upon receipt of the certification, the University Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella reiterated the importance of prioritising equitable practices and claimed that, “our goal, as a University, is to foster public responsibility and inspire service by identifying opportunities and leading by example.”
The University Rector further claimed that “we must remain vigilant against any form of discrimination and to support one another in our shared pursuit of equality.”
The event came to an end with the Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Hon. Rebecca Buttigieg’s address to the audience. She augured the University on this certification and commended the University of Malta on its efforts and commitment to create an inclusive working and learning environment.
