Hésitation & création, edited by François Soulages, L’Harmattan publishers,
collection Eidos Série Art, Paris, France, 2024, 173p. ISBN 9782336468013
At Valletta Campus last May 6 & 7, François Soulages, Prof. Emeritus of Université de Paris8 Vincennes Saint-Denis, along with Dr Marilyn Mallia and Prof. Richard Spiteri from the Department of French of the Faculty of Arts, University of Malta, held an international conference entitled Hésitation & creation.
The theoretical basis of what was essentially an interdisciplinary conference was laid out by Soulages’s presentation of the philosophy of uncertainty. He notably refers to Michel Serres who takes a risk on truth.
Démosthène Agrafiotis dwells on uncertainty and performance. Gabriel Baudrand branches out into another field and tackles uncertainty in quantum physics, in mathematics and, not least, in logic. The literature papers are the work of Dominique Lanni, Vincent Metzger, Anabel Said, Hélène Sirven and Prof. Richard Spiteri.
With Soulages being a philosopher of the image, it is no surprise that a share of this volume is devoted to the aesthetics of photography. Such are the papers of Bernard Koest and Gilles Picarel. Besides one can read with pleasure as well the papers on photography by contributors from South-East Asia: Jae Joon Chung, Juae Eum, Yi-Chen Liu and Bohnchang Koo.
Dr Marilyn Mallia moves on to cinema, more exactly on Truffaut.
Charlo Camilleri, from the Faculty of Theology, University of Malta, delivered a paper on the archives of the Carmelitan Order that are kept in the city of Rennes and which have survived the blind wrath of the Revolution of 1789. Other welcome papers are those of Manuela Manzini and of Ludwig Camilleri.
The volume has a foreward by Renaud Lallemant, the Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural action at the French Embassy in Valletta. The success of the conference was due as well to Prof. Ivan Callus from the Department of English who delivered a paper on his work in progress.
