Dr Claudine Borg, Head of the Department of Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies, and Dr Marilyn Mallia, Senior Lecturer in the Department of French, have teamed up to present a paper at the international Conference: ‘Annie Ernaux: Global Perspectives’ at the University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews.

Their joint presentation, entitled ‘Teaching and Translating Annie Ernaux’s 'L’événement' in the Maltese context’, which explored the significance of their professional engagement with this French writer’s work as well as its specific challenges, was enthusiastically received by the academic community.

Ernaux received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022 “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”. The conference included a live virtual encounter with the author herself, who responded to a number of questions.

Dr Mallia has been teaching Ernaux’s L’événement to BA French students since 2018, while Dr Borg’s Maltese translation of this autobiographical book was selected for funding by the National Book Council, and will be published in 2025.
