Academic and marine biologist, Prof. Alan Deidun and UM student, Mr Steve Zemmit Lupi, were honoured for their outstanding contributions to environmental conservation at the Environmental Resource Authority (ERA) Awards held on Saturday 16 November 2024 at Verdala Palace.
Organised by the Environment and Resources Authority under President Myriam Spiteri Debono’s patronage, the awards highlight efforts to drive environmental change. Malta's Minister for the Environment, Hon. Miriam Dalli, was also present for the ceremony.
Prof. Deidun, Malta’s first Ocean Ambassador, received the Buonamico Award for his research and advocacy, while Mr Zammit Lupi was recognised for his eco-activism, including a cycling campaign promoting sustainability.
During his address, ERA Chairman Vincent Cassar highlighted how the achievements of Deidun and Zammit Lupi serve as an inspiration for others to embrace greater environmental responsibility.
In her speech, President Spiteri Debono highlighted the importance of safeguarding both urban and rural environments. She emphasised the need to manage natural resources carefully, stressing the necessity of balancing the demands of a growing population and economy with considerations for public health.
Awardees from previous years include UM's own Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, Biology Professor, Prof. Victor Axiak, retired Biology Senior Lecturer at JC, Ms Jennifer Fiorentino and former part-time Biology lecturer, Mr David Dandria.
