Two academics from the University’s School of Performing Arts, Dr Albert Pace and Dr Mro John Galea, have edited the Maltese section of an EU Songbook, a musical collection highlighting memorable songs from each EU member state.
17 academics from 14 member states selected songs in six categories, that are reflected in the final publication. These six categories are:
- Love Songs
- Nature and Seasons
- Freedom and Peace
- Folk Songs
- Faith and Spirituals
- Children’s Song
The songs are presented in the publication in their original language alongside a version in European English.
The top six songs from Malta were selected from among 41 songs that were nominated back in 2018.
The songs chosen for each category are:
- Love Songs – Xemx (1975) by Dominic Grech and The Tramps
- Nature and Seasons – L-Aħħar Bidwi f’Wied il-Għasel (1974) by Paul Abela and Alfred C. Sant
- Freedom and Peace – Tema ’79 by Pail Abela and Raymond Mahoney
- Folk Songs - Viva Malta (1966) by Freddie Portelli
- Faith and Spirituals – Iddeċidejt by Tiziana Grech
- Children’s Song - Ninni la tibkix iżjed (1846) by Jesuit Indri Schembri
An EU Songbook App, which includes all the songs in the physical edition, is available for free from the App Store and Google Play.
