This season, listeners of Campus 103.7 have been regaled with the sound of tango music from international performers and learnt about the dance and culture of Argentine tango. In the first ever radio series on tango in Malta, Cafetín de Buenos Aires, Dr Karen Micallef Xuereb hosted Maltese, Argentinian, Italian and American dancers, teachers, and artists, who shared their joy and work experience of this world heritage art form. Special guests included Dr Paula Guzzanti from UM’s own School of Performing Arts, who shared her academic passage from Argentina to Malta and tango traveller Prof. Gordon J. Pace, from the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of ICT.
Tango is an entire world of social evenings known as milongas, international festivals and friendship happenings created on the dancefloor, open to everyone. In the last episodes of this year, the series in English caught up with a female bandoneon (a type of accordion) player and composer, Winnie Cheung of Indiana, USA. More international guests, who will be on air this month, include Maurizio Nicastro who speaks about the Malta tango marathon, an all-female Argentinian tango singing group, and a tango podcaster from California.
Tune in to Cafetín on Campus 103.7 (FM) on Fridays at 18:00 and 23:00 with a further repeat on Sundays at noon, to listen live or catch up ‘on demand’.
