On 7 December, the University of Malta (UM) Chess Tournament saw a strong presence from the academic community, with three professors stepping up to the challenge in this exciting event. Professors Arthur Rodriguez G. Cortes, Josef Lauri and Conrad Thake represented the academic contingent, showcasing impressive skills on the chessboard.
Organised by the UM Chess Club, under the leadership of its president, student Matthias Gatt, the tournament featured 28 participants and consisted of five rounds in a rapid-play format. The event brought together students, faculty, and chess enthusiasts, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie.
Prof. Conrad Thake emerged as the star of the tournament, clinching the first prize with a remarkable performance. The three academics won the majority of their games, making their presence felt in a field dominated by talented players from various disciplines.
