Members of the Faculty of Laws were instrumental in the recent establishment of a Malta branch of the prestigious International Law Association (ILA). The ILA is one of the foremost associations dealing with the progressive development of international law and was established in 1873 in Brussels. The context of its creation lay in the conviction that international law is essential for peace, justice and development. Currently, the ILA has over 4,500 members spread across branches all over the world. The objectives are mainly pursued through the work of the international committees dealing with topics such as the use of force, international law and sea level rise, international migration and international law, business and human rights law, diplomatic and consular immunities and privileges, international investment law, international monetary law and urbanisation and international law.
The Malta branch had its inaugural meeting on 23 October 2024 and was formally approved by the ILA Executive Council on 9 November 2024. Amongst the founding members were the University Chancellor, the Dean of the Faculty of Laws, a number of Heads of Departments, Faculty members and students.
Dr Felicity G. Attard was elected President of the ILA Malta Branch, Prof. Patricia Vella de Fremeaux Vice President, and Prof. Omar Grech Secretary.
