On 29 November, nearly 200 Year-11 students participated in the outreach event Una giornata con l’italiano all’università, held at Sir Temi Zammit Hall. The event was organised by the Department of Italian at the University of Malta and Ms. Christine Borg, the Education Officer for Italian at the Directorate for Early Years, Languages and Humanities, MEYR. Its aim was to promote the Italian language and culture through engaging and interactive activities.
The day began with a brief welcome address by the Italian Ambassador, H.E. Fabrizio Romano, who reflected on the status of the Italian language in Malta. He expressed his enthusiasm for the students' interest in learning Italian, highlighting its usefulness across various career paths they might pursue after their studies.
The programme continued with a presentation of fun and unusual facts about Italy and its language, which captivated the students and elicited reactions ranging from curiosity to amusement.
The students then participated in two dynamic activities. The first was a quiz on Italian culture, designed to test their knowledge in an entertaining and competitive manner. The second activity, Caccia al personaggio, introduced students to some key figures of Italian culture, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
In addition to its educational success, the event served as an important networking opportunity, bringing together the University of Malta, the Directorate for Early Years, Languages and Humanities, and teachers from various schools.
Una giornata con l’italiano all’università was a vibrant initiative that fostered a deeper appreciation for Italian language and culture while strengthening connections among key stakeholders in Italian education in Malta, laying the groundwork for future collaborations and similar fruitful initiatives.
