Thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Tuesday 7 January 2025 by Aquatic Resources Malta (ARM) Agency and the University of Malta (UM), students will now have the opportunity to apply for part-time student placements within ARM, and make use of laboratories and other facilities at either of the signatories to conduct their research on fisheries and aquaculture.
The two entities have also agreed to set up a research programme with interdisciplinary academic expertise, to establish common research themes and jointly work on advancing the sector.
The sharing of knowledge between the two entities is yet another benefit of this newly-signed MoU, as it gives ARM access to the University Library’s print collections.
Aquatic Resources Malta is the entity responsible for boosting the local fisheries and aquaculture sectors through innovative research and investments. It was set up in 2023 with the aim of aiding the Government to widen its horizons on the sector.
The signing of the agreement was presided over by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation, Clifton Grima, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said.
Minister Grima stated that "the Government recognises the importance of research in this sector, as well as the potential it holds to generate wealth, knowledge, improvements, and quality jobs. The National Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation for the 2023-2027 period aims to foster greater scientific curiosity and encourage more collaborations, including those between academia, industry, and other sectors,” said Minister Grima.
Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said explained that this agreement represents another milestone in the progress Malta is making in research related to fisheries and aquaculture. “Today, we see the expertise of the University of Malta combined with the resources and capabilities of ARM to increase innovation, sustainability, and economic opportunities in the sector. Through research programs and access to facilities and laboratories, we will enhance opportunities for students to expand their knowledge in maritime careers. We are pleased to have reached this agreement as it strengthens the strong reputation our country has in maritime research."
Rector of the University of Malta, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, emphasised how this hands-on element “gears students up for success in their careers. Through such a strategic partnership, we are facilitating the sharing of resources thus enhancing the performance of successful research in both institutions as related to fisheries and aquaculture, areas of significant importance that contribute to economic well being and food security. Through placements, our students will network with persons in the industry with whom they could potentially share the workplace once they graduate.”
CEO of Aquatic Resources Malta, Dr Francis Fabri, reiterated how vital the fisheries and aquaculture sectors are to Malta’s economy and sustainability. “This collaboration will open many doors of opportunities for students as well as researchers to work in this industry. The collaboration with academic institutions empowers our mission and injects fresh ideas and purpose into our ongoing efforts to enhance and sustain Malta’s marine resources”, he said.
