Advancing Quantum Computing in Malta: Quantum Algorithms and Machine Learning is the name of an innovative research programme that is set to place Malta at the forefront of developing new technologies, a press conference held in January 2025 announced.
The ground-breaking research programme in the field of Quantum Computing is carried out through a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation and the University of Malta.
The initiative itself is spearheaded by two of UM's academics, Prof. Andre' Xuereb and Prof. Tony Apollaro, and it seeks to connect quantum computation theory with its practical applications in various areas such as healthcare, climate change and artificial intelligence, among others.
Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research & Innovation, Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti, who attended the press conference, spoke about how this initiative underscores Malta's commitment to fostering innovation. He remarked that it showcases the talent of our researchers and our aspiration to position Malta as a centre for advanced technologies. Furthermore, it represents a chance to unlock new opportunities.
Through this project, a number of collaborations with leading tech corporations such as Amazon, IBM and Airbus, will provide added opportunities for researchers and students to access advanced quantum computing infrastructure. Funding for postdoctoral research, and the exchange of knowledge are another two massive advantages it'll bring about.
Prof. Xuereb called this an "exciting opportunity for Malta to contribute meaningfully to the global scientific community".
The creation of a permanent Quantum Computing Exhibition at Esplora is being explored, and in 2026, Malta will host an international summer school to attract researchers from across the globe.
