Valletta, Malta – The L-STEAM — Learning STEAM Through the Performing Arts project, an Erasmus+ funded initiative, was officially launched on Tuesday January 21 and Wednesday 22, at the Valletta Design Cluster.
The event invited local school educators to present this innovative two-year project, which aims to embed the performing arts into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across schools in Malta, Greece, and Portugal through co-designed and tailored approaches.
During the launch event, local practitioners shared their experiences, barriers and insights on implementing STEAM activities using performing arts in Maltese schools. As L-STEAM seeks to adapt its approach to real school settings, these discussions provided valuable input for shaping the project’s methodology.
In addition to the co-design process, the project is organising the L-STEAM Summer School 2025 for primary to secondary school educators, taking place from 6 to 11 July, in Marathon, Greece. This five-day training experience is designed to equip teachers with innovative, transdisciplinary skills to engage students in STEM subjects through performing arts such as theatre, dance, and music activities based on scientific concepts.
Participants will explore inquiry-based learning, open schooling, and arts-integrated STEM education while collaborating with colleagues from Malta, Cyprus, Greece, and Portugal. The project will award three (3) scholarships to school teachers covering travel, accommodation, and training costs for the full duration of the summer school.
Further information is also available by email.
L-STEAM is led by Dr Edward Duca from the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, in collaboration with the education NGOs ScienceView (Greece), the Núcleo Interativo de Astronomia e Inovação em Educação (NUCLIO - Portugal), Inquirium Ltd (Cyprus), and two schools—Ellinogermaniki Agogi (Greece) and Dasoupolis Primary School (Cyprus). The project is funded by the Erasmus+ programme (KA2).
