The UM Wolves RFC Men’s Team are now mathematically confirmed as league champions – the first time the club has ever won the top honour in men’s rugby in Malta.
The confirmation came on Thursday night when the club was informed that Stompers RFC would not be able to honour its fixture against the club which was scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday 15 February.
Consequently, a 28-0 bonus point victory was awarded to UM Wolves RFC, meaning that five points were added to the club’s league table tally.
With nine matches now played and a maximum 45 points acquired, UM Wolves RFC can no longer be caught at the top of the table!
It’s an immense achievement for the club in only its fourth season competing in top senior men’s domestic rugby, and a huge turnaround from past seasons where the club consistently finished in 5th place.
Club President Albert Galea told the players in a gathering on Saturday evening of his immense pride in the achievement.
“There are people still part of the club today who have been with us since the very beginning, seven and a half years ago, who dreamt of this day but likely thought it might never come. I’m immensely proud of everyone for their efforts throughout not just this season, but in the years since our club was founded back in 2017,” he said.
This still isn’t the end of the season for our men’s team though: they have three league matches still to play, with the next one being scheduled for Saturday 8 March against Stompers RFC.
After that, the men head into their MRFU Cup commitments, with a semi-final against Falcons RFC awaiting at the end of the season.
