The University's Institute of Space Sciences & Astronomy (ISSA) celebrated its 10th anniversary with an event at Villa Bighi, Kalkara, on Friday 21 March 2025, which it organised in collaboration with Xjenza Malta.
The day brought together scientists, academics, industry professionals, and space enthusiasts. It also provided a platform for recent graduates to showcase their research in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology, highlighting the innovative work conducted at ISSA.
Founded in 2014 by Prof. Kristian Zarb Adami, ISSA has established itself as a leader in interdisciplinary research, merging science, engineering, and ICT.
Over the years, it has built strong partnerships with prestigious institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The institute has also developed state-of-the-art infrastructure, including supercomputing facilities and advanced theoretical physics research.
Reflecting on the institute’s journey, ISSA Director, Prof. Alessio Magro expressed pride in its achievements.
“We have not only expanded research and knowledge in space science but also cultivated an environment where innovation thrives. I look forward to the next phase of our work and the continued impact we will have on both local and international scientific communities,” he said.
Xjenza Malta Senior Director, Omar Cutajar, also acknowledged ISSA’s growth and reaffirmed support for its future endeavours.
“The progress of ISSA over the past decade has been extraordinary. Its success is a testament to the dedication and passion of its researchers and faculty, as well as the collaborative spirit that drives innovation in space science,” he said.
