The Faculty of Engineering Sustainability Committee at the University of Malta successfully held the Seminar on Sustainable Engineering 2025 on Wednesday, 9 April, at the Engineering Research and Innovation Labs. The event brought together researchers, academics, and students to explore how engineering is responding to today’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
The seminar, chaired by Dr Ing. Luana Chetcuti Zammit, was opened by Prof. Ing. Paul Refalo, Chair of the Faculty Sustainability Committee and Prof. Valerie Sollars, Pro-Rector for Strategic Planning & Sustainability.
They highlighted the Faculty’s and University's commitment to sustainable development and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The programme featured a range of insightful presentations showcasing innovative research from across the Faculty:
- Hydro-Pneumatic Energy Storage - MUSICA Project by Mr Luke Aquilina
- Energy Efficiency Management for Sustainable Maritime Transportation by Dr Tien Anh Tran
- Intelligent Optimisation in Smart and Sustainable Compressed Air Systems by Ms Jasmine Mallia
- Dynamic Thermography and Explainable AI for Early Skin Cancer Diagnosis by Mr Nipun Sandamal
- Surface Engineering of Biodegradable WE43 Magnesium Alloy for Sustainable Healthcare Systems by Ms Sarah Galea
- Microwave Phased Array System for Hyperthermia Breast Cancer Treatment by Ms Therese Quattromani
The presentations encouraged engaging discussions around sustainability in healthcare, energy systems, maritime and intelligent diagnostics. Attendees praised the seminar for its multidisciplinary approach and the high calibre of the research presented.
