On Sunday 24 April, the University of Malta’s Centre for Environmental Education and Research (CEER), in collaboration with the youth environmental organisation Greenhouse Malta, organised an open day event at its Fawwara Centre. CEER staff members, Greenhouse Malta activists, family members and friends joined together in an informal and leisurely day of gardening and outdoor maintenance work at the Fawwara Centre. 

Located in the picturesque surroundings of Fawwara, Siggiewi, the Fawwara Centre is a multipurpose education and research centre managed by CEER. The space is a site for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and ESD research. Its unique setup makes it an optimal space for conducting research and ESD initiatives, not least due to its location and surroundings, which by their very own nature help bridge the gap between the often separate worlds of research, practice and ESD. 

Sunday’s event was just the latest in a series of informal and non-formal educational events organised by CEER and Greenhouse Malta at the Fawwara Centre. CEER believes that such events help to foster and strengthen important networks between different people and entities working in the field of education and/or sustainable development. Indeed, CEER welcomes any opportunity to collaborate with community members and civil society organisations that work in congruence with its ESD mission and principles. 

CEER works to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and ESD research in the Euro-Mediterranean region, and seeks to be a catalyst for social change towards a sustainable society. It endeavours to offer ESD opportunities that empower citizens to actively participate in decision making fora and in initiatives that promote a good quality of life for all. Greenhouse Mata is a youth environmental Non-Governmental Organisation that works on environmental and social issues by promoting discussion, raising awareness and implementing simple solutions.
