Dr Michelle Attard Tonna and Mr James Calleja, two members of the Faculty of Education, University of Malta, organised a seminar on 26 February to present the results of a research study which was carried out in the past months, on the teaching profession in Malta.
Over 1000 educators have answered a questionnaire about their intentions of career progression, the routes they would take were they given the opportunity, and their dispositions to further learning and development.
This research study provides important insights on the current morale of teachers, the professional opportunities available and / or those they would consider, and the reasons why they are satisfied / dissatisfied with their career.
This seminar brought together 150 educators offering them the opportunity to discuss their preliminary reactions to this research study. The main objective for this seminar was to discuss the reasons which motivate people in Malta to choose to become teachers, and how these motivations change over time.
The discussion also centered on whether motivation can be enhanced or changed as a result of particular types of professional development programmes teachers engage in.
