The aim of the Glossary is to provide a comprehensive bank of mathematical terms, in both English and Maltese. It is anticipated that the Glossary will serve as a useful reference for teachers and students since, in Malta, mathematics is very often taught through both languages.
The chairperson of the working group involved in developing the Glossary is UM’s Prof. Marie-Therese Farrugia, Associate Professor at the Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education within the Faculty of Education.
Her area of specialisation is Early Childhood and Primary Mathematics education, and her research interests lie in the use of language in mathematics teaching.
The draft of the Glossary sections completed to date will soon be available online and in hard copy versions for public consultation.
Other than Prof. Farrugia, the working group consists of David Muscat and Dr Lara Ann Vella, from the National Agency for Literacy, and Melanie Casha Sammut, from the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes within the Ministry for Education.
Prof. Farrugia told Newspoint that the team is presently working on organising the online and hard copy publications of the work, which she believes may be very beneficial for students’ educational experience of mathematics.
