The Trio, playing Johann Mattheson – Sonata Op. 1, No.3 – Movement 2, is composed of Sara Abela – flute, Chelsea Xuereb – violin and Courtney Caruana – clarinet, from UM's School of Performing Arts.
Chelsea and Courtney are both graduating this year, having completed their Bachelor of Music programme last year. Sara is following a Bachelor of Arts in Maltese and Music and is now in her third year of study.
The Trio thought it would be interesting to blend three different timbres since the flute, violin and clarinet read in the treble clef. The idea was to bring out the character of the musical piece in a distinct manner, both in its pitch and intensity. In fact, the texture of the piece allows each instrument to find its significance in the composition.
Thus, the Trio worked to keep a consistent balance in their sound to produce a unified piece since each of the three players execute the melody besides accompanying the other instruments.
Johann Mattheson is primarily known for his work as a music theorist, having analysed and written about the relationship between rhetoric and music. Apart from this, Mattheson also composed music in the Baroque Era. His compositions are primarily vocal, including several cantatas and oratorios and also eight operas. Apart from this, Mattheson composed a few sonatas, from which we find Sonata Op.1 No.3 written for three treble instruments.
