The second edition of Maltese and other languages is now out.
Professor Joseph M. Brincat has been working on the linguistic history of Malta since the year 2000, when Il-Malti. Elf Sena ta’ Storja was published by PIN (reprinted in 2005). He rewrote it in more detail in Italian for the Centro sul Plurilinguismo at the University of Udine under the title Malta. Una storia linguistica (Le Mani, Genova, 2004), and then produced the English edition in 2011 for Midsea Books.
This new revised edition includes fully updated statistics and bibliography, citing books and articles that have been published since its original release ten years ago.
Professor Brincat considers the Maltese language in the context of the languages that have been used in Malta over the centuries and that have contributed to its development. He applies the principles and methodology of historical, socio- and geo- linguistics to show how a Maghrebi Arabic dialect that was also spoken in Sicily around the year 1000 has been enriched by contact with Sicilian, Italian and English and reached official language status through the long process of standardization.
The book will be available at the Midsea Books / Klabb Kotba Maltin stand at the Book Fair next week for EUR 40.
