On Friday 10 December 2021, the University of Malta's SEA-EU team led by Professor Baldacchino welcomed a group of forty students from the St Ignatius College Tal-Ħandaq Middle School. Among the students were the nine craft competition participants who were given the opportunity to showcase their creations to their peers.
The craft competition titled From Trash to Art offered the students an opportunity to re-imagine the coastlines of one of the SEA-EU cities - Cádiz (Spain), Western Brittany (Brest, France), Kiel (Germany), Gdańsk (Poland), Split (Croatia) and Malta - and create a 3-D diagram or sculpture of one of these coasts using recyclable materials. Students were also encouraged to include elements within their creations that highlight how we can continue to enjoy these stretches of coastline sustainably.
All participating students were provided with a certificate of participation and the first four winning students were awarded with gift vouchers from Esplora Interactive Science Centre and The Model Shop. Their visit to the UM campus was concluded with a tour led by Dr Alexndra Bonnici of the Faculty of Engineering labs.
