The University Maritime Platform is proud to announce the formation of a new committee as from January 2023. The scope of the UM Maritime Platform is to create more interfaculty synergies between academics specialised in maritime and marine aspects and develop intersectoral collaborations and training with the relevant industry partners and stakeholders.
Prof. Adriana Vella is the newly appointed Chairperson of the University of Malta Maritime Platform (UMP). Prof. Vella thanked the outgoing Chairperson Prof. Claire De Marco for her years of tireless energy in setting up the University Maritime Platform and expressed confidence that “the platform will continue to share the common goal of addressing the knowledge growth of marine and maritime science.” In bringing together a pool of diverse and committed experts, Prof. Vella remarked how “the platform will deepen its commitment to address the emerging multidisciplinary dynamics of the maritime and marine sector to strengthen its intersectoral bridges which span across various ministries, government agencies, and relevant private stakeholders.”
The committee will comprise of ten academic members hailing from various Faculties and Institutes and two administration managers and include: Prof. Inġ. Simon Fabri as Pro-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer, Dr Ritienne Gauci as the UMP’s Vice-Chair, Prof. Inġ. Claire De Marco, Prof. Luciano Mule Stagno, Prof. Patricia Vella de Fremeaux, Prof. Matthew Montebello, Dr Anthony Galea, Inġ. Elisa Vella and Ms Angie Mifsud.
Through the setting-up of six targeted Action Groups, i.e., Research, Education, Industrial Liaison, Funding, Outreach and Consultation, the University Maritime Platform will be working collaboratively with stakeholders by also inviting two additional external members from the private and/or government sectors to join the platform’s committee. These pillars of action frame the platform’s ongoing and concerted efforts to best represent the University of Malta as a point of reference for maritime and marine related domains and remain relevant for both the national or international community interests and needs in the blue sector.
Membership to University Maritime Platform is open all year round to academic members of staff with a maritime and marine interest and who are willing to contribute towards the objectives of the platform.
