The Institute of Earth Systems recently organised a two-day Careers Convention aimed at highlighting the various employment opportunities available to students on graduation with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Earth Systems.
The event, which was held on 26 and 27 June 2023, was attended by third-year students who recently submitted their final year projects and who will go on to graduate later on this year. The programme was designed to provide information about potential career pathways, through presentations by representatives from private and governmental entities within which job opportunities are likely to arise requiring the knowledge and skills imparted by the B.Sc. Earth Systems degree.
The presentations delivered during the event examined various careers offered by potential employers, and the speakers briefed students about the conditions of work and about the requirements and duties to be expected of various jobs, as well as the opportunities for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and workplace measures to ensure a healthy work-life balance. Organisations represented at the convention included agencies and authorities such as Malta Enterprise, Ambjent Malta, Wasteserv, the Energy and Water Agency (EWA), the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and the Malta Meteorological Office. Amongst the private companies who participated were ST Microelectronics, APS Bank, En-Sure Ltd, EY Malta and KPMG Malta.
The first day’s programme was followed by a Q&A session, while the second day ended with a mini-workshop on job preparation which included tips on how to put together an effective curriculum vitae.
The activity also aimed to facilitate networking, allowing students with an interest in a particular career field to initiate contact with the organisations they might be interested in working with in the future. Also included within the programme were presentations on the Institute’s three relevant Master-level degree courses: the M.Sc. in Environmental Management and Sustainability opening in August, and the M.Sc. in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment and the M.Sc. (by research) in Rural and Environmental Sciences, both opening in October this year.
