Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino is the latest beneficiary of the longstanding collaboration between UM and the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada (UPEI) which has been in place for over three decades. It all started with a visit by the then Director of UPEI's Institute of Island Studies (IIS), Harry Baglole, to Malta in the early 1990s; and then Prof. Baldacchino's invitation as a speaker at an international island studies conference held in PEI in 1992. Since then, dozens of staff and students from both universities have visited each other's campuses for short- or medium-term visits. Exchanges have involved students and staff from various faculties, including FEMA, Arts, Theology and Nursing. PEI is Canada's smallest and only fully-islanded province, and UPEI its only university.
This summer, Prof. Baldacchino contributed to UPEI's summer school programme with lectures on Island Life. During his stay he also met the current IIS Director, Dr Laurie Brinklow; former IIS Director, Dr Jim Randall; Ms Sherilyn Acorn from the International Office; Island Studies Press Coordinator Ms Bren Simmers; and Environmental Studies professor Rick Schneider. His visit has been kindly supported by Erasmus+ ICM funding.
