The Malta College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MCOG), in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Malta, successfully delivered the first Masterclass in Gynaecology Laparoscopic Cadaveric Surgery on the 1 June 2024.
This collaboration provided Maltese specialist trainees in gynaecology the opportunity to combine the excellent resources of the Anatomy Department at the UM with the knowledge and surgical training skills from MCOG specialist trainers.
This innovative method of surgical training allows trainee surgeons the opportunity to develop surgical skills in a safe environment, that is as close to real life surgery as possible. This will result in surgeons having a higher skill set, when operating in real life, with the ultimate goal of improving patient safety and pushing forward with surgical innovation.
Dr Max Brincat from the MCOG and Prof. Jean Calleja Agius at the Department of Anatomy aim to further develop this course to provide Maltese gynaecology trainees cutting edge simulation surgical training.
This will give local trainees the opportunity to carry out novel surgical methods in best simulation setting possible.
This collaboration is possible thanks to the technical staff at the Dissection Halls within the Department of Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and to the noble and selfless individuals who have donated their body to UM for medical studies.
