Prof. Joseph M. Brincat was the main speaker at the launch of a book by Davide Basaldella titled Siciliano e italiano a Malta fra Quattro e Cinquecento. Edizione e commento linguistico di testi volgari dell'Archivio notarile della Valletta (Strasbourg, EliPhi, 2024, 332 pages), in which the author presents a detailed analysis of graphic, phonetic, morpho-syntactic and lexical aspects of 27 acts from the late "Sicilian" period, 1486 – 1513, and 20 acts written in the early decades of the Knights' rule, 1539 to 1565.

In this way he compares the shift from the use of Chancery Sicilian to the Tuscan Volgare, which was then being slowly adopted in all the regions of Italy. With a glossary of 343 peculiar terms, the book is extremely useful to scholars who carry out research on Maltese documents of the 15th and 16th centuries at the Notarial Archives and other libraries.

At the invitation of Stefania Gialdroni, Prof. of Storia del Diritto Medievale e Moderno, Prof. Brincat also delivered a lecture on "Il diritto a Malta. La fusione di pratiche siciliane, italiane e inglesi in un contesto plurilingue" to students of the Dipartimento di Diritto Privato e Critica del Diritto.

The lecture was also attended by Prof. Claudio Carcereri de Prati, who had organised a conference on "Alla confluenza di Common Law and Civil Law. Il Codice Penale di Malta (1854)" in Venice in 2003, and by Prof. Daniele Baglioni (Università Ca' Foscari) who has published papers about the use of Italian in the Mediterranean.
