In June, the Master in Translation and Terminology Studies offered by the Department of Translation, Terminology, and Interpreting Studies was once again accepted into the prestigious European Master’s in Translation (EMT) network for the 2024-2029 period.
The EMT is a collaborative project between the European Commission and higher education institutions that provide master’s-level translation programmes. Serving as a quality label, the EMT is awarded by the Directorate-General for Translation (DG Translation) of the European Commission to university programmes that meet high professional standards and market requirements. Membership in the EMT network is granted for a five-year term. The University of Malta's Master in Translation and Terminology Studies was first accepted into the EMT network in 2019, and the quality of our programme was recognised again in 2024.
As an EMT member, the University of Malta enjoys several benefits, including access to short-term training placements for students and enhanced programme visibility. Membership also fosters cooperation among network institutions, enabling the sharing of resources, knowledge, and best practices, and strengthening the status of translation as a profession.
Regular meetings among EMT members facilitate the exchange of best practices and collaboration on projects aimed at curriculum and teaching method innovation. The network maintains strong ties with the language industry, ensuring that programmes remain aligned with current industry trends, such as advancements in technology and evolving employer expectations.
At the European level, this structured dialogue between academia and industry is overseen by the EMT Board and the Board of the Language Industry. The DG Translation supports the EMT by organising network meetings, promoting research collaborations, encouraging academia-business cooperation, and facilitating training placements for students. In turn, EMT universities contribute to DG Translation’s continuous professional development initiatives.
On 24-25 October, Dr Claudine Borg, head of the Department of Translation, Terminology, and Interpreting Studies, received the EMT certificate on behalf of the department and attended the first meeting of the 2024-2029 EMT Network in Brussels.
